Glides and runs are intermediate habitat types that fall between riffles and pools. A glide is an area where the flow is... slow-moving [and] nonturbulent..., similar to that in a shallow canal. After an initial ultrasound examination, the barbotage is usually performed when you are lying on your side. With a thin needle the whole injection area is first numbed. The calcific deposit is then approached with one or two needles and multiple punctures are performed. The procedure is highly precise and the needle is continuously watched on the ultrasound. Care is taken to minimize injury to the tendon. Sometimes water pressure is used through the needle to break and suck the calcium deposits in the area. Following the barbotage, an injection of steroid and local anesthetic is administered. 1, record 2, English, - barbotage

The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don’t mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity(haline) variations. 2, record 44, English, - deep%20water

16, record 62, French, - sprinkleur

In December of 1994, the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean(TAO) Array was completed. The TAO Array is a series of about seventy buoys carefully placed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Each buoy has special equipment that records information about the water and the air above the water. All of the buoys work together, forming an array, to give scientists a big picture of climate conditions in the area. The buoys send their data to scientists everyday by way of weather satellites that orbit Earth. Since 1994, scientists have been able to watch the water and the air for signs of El Niño. Once they notice that the water is getting warmer, they can keep track of the other changes and help to make predictions about the effects of El Niño better than they ever have before. 1, record 63, English, - Tropical%20Atmosphere%20Ocean%20Array

1, record 63, French, - R%C3%A9seau%20oc%C3%A9an%2Datmosph%C3%A8re%20pour%20observation%20dans%20les%20mers%20tropicales

The increasing concentration of 1,2-DCP detected in Village production wells concerned SWDO’s Division of Drinking and Ground Water (DDAGW). In the summer of 1997, DDAGW requested that Ripley take action to reduce the concentration of 1,2-DCP to below 5.0 µg/l. Failure to do so would lead to requirements for costly treatment. There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service : line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors : the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution. 6, record 66, English, - in%2Dline%20foam%20concentrate%20inducer

(Heeling in) is a procedure designed to keep alive and in the best possible condition bare-root plants dug for transplanting that cannot be planted immediately. ... It is done by digging a trench or ditch of sufficient size to accommodate the roots of plants laid as closely together as practicable without breaking, or bunching the roots to the extent that soil filled in will not be in contact with them. 1, record 73, English, - trench
Record number: 73, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Water your heeling trenches thoroughly, immediately before setting your plants into this temporary home. Cut off any roots which were damaged in the moving process, and then you can set each plant into the trench, allowing a small space between each rootball. Mix moist peat moss or wood shavings with the native soil to increase the water retention capabilities of the soil. Using this mixture, work the soil in among the roots, and cover the entire root ball slightly deeper than at the depth it was previously covered. Water again, thoroughly. Be sure to water this holding area regularly, but do not feed the plants. This method should keep your plants alive for 6 months or longer, until you are ready to set them into their permanent garden home. 2, record 73, English, - trench

Oil slick dispersants. When oil... is treated with a suitable surface active agent and agitation applied, the oil is broken up into particles... so small that they constitute an oil-in-water emulsion... Dispersants serve to increase the surface area of an oil spill and disperse oil globules throughout the layer volume water. This causes an accelerated degradation of oil by microbiological action. 7, record 76, English, - dispersant
Record number: 76, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The chemicals used to disperse the oil are emulsifiers. Although a chemist would never confuse the terms dispersant and emulsifier, the former designating a product which encourages the distribution of finely divided solids in a fluid, either liquid or gas, the latter referring to a product which encourages the colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another, the terms are synonymous in the field of oil pollution control. This is explained by the following sentence taken from "The Control of oil pollution on the sea and inland waters", edited by J. Wardley-Smith (source COCOB): "It was found ... [that the product] when sprayed on to the oil, effectively softened and dispersed it by means of emulsification ..." The dispersion is accomplished by products which emulsify the oil, i.e., emulsifiers. Dispersion is used in its general sense and hence dispersant simply means a product that causes spreading. Also dispersant is used more frequently than emulsifier. 8, record 76, English, - dispersant

The cooling tower is a means for cooling water through the medium of partial evaporation. The action that takes place is one whereby the stream to be cooled is broken up into a fine mist or rain, thus exposing a very large surface area.
