One significant knowledge gap necessary for assessing ecosystem-wide impacts of restoration in... estuaries is a characterization of baseline lower trophic levels. These lower tropic levels are the lowest part of the food web where organisms such as plant-like phytoplankton serve as food to animals such as zooplankton in the water column. Other organisms of lower trophic levels include plant-like microphytobenthos and marine worms living within the sediments. These organisms form an important part of the estuary ecosystem [and] provide energy at the base of the food chain [that] support the growth of larger predators at the top[, ] such as speckled trout or red fish[. These] organisms also help to break down debris, put oxygen back into sediments, and can provide a biological window into the health of an estuary. 1, record 2, English, - lower%20trophic%20level

An acoustic survey is a method of gathering information on the abundance of a fish species using echo sounders. Sound is a form of energy which travels farther and faster underwater than in the air. So using the distance a sound travels and the record it makes when it bounces off of something underwater can tell a researcher a good deal about the creatures passing by underwater. 3, record 8, English, - hydroacoustic%20survey
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In an acoustic survey, a transducer emits a pulse of sound. The transducer can be either fixed or mounted on a moving vessel. The sound moves through the water until it bumps into something, such as a fish, and part of its energy is reflected back to the transducer. Another device, called an echo sounder, amplifies the returned energy and sends it to a recorder where it registers as a mark. 3, record 8, English, - hydroacoustic%20survey

… hydrodynamic effect means the result of water in motion. On vessels of any size, but especially on large vessels, as the boat moves through the water the friction of the water on the bow and on the hull causes the water to create turbulence. This turbulence, as the force of the water moves toward the stern(back) of the boat, tends to pull floating objects into the side of the boat. 1, record 15, English, - hydrodynamic%20effect

The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don’t mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity(haline) variations. 2, record 17, English, - deep%20water

Pump surging(sometimes called Rawhiding) involves the repeated pumping and resting of the well for well development purposes. A column of water that is withdrawn through a pump is allowed to surge back into the well by turning the pump on and off repeatedly. However, sufficient time for the pump motor to stop reverse rotation must be allowed, such that pump damage can be avoided. Occasionally, water is pumped to waste until it is clear of sediment before again shutting the pump off. This is done to permanently remove the sediments that are being developed by the backwashing action. The process continues until sufficient quantities of water produced are consistently clean. 1, record 24, English, - pump%20surging

The BIOLIFTTM process uses the technique of fixed bacteria on a fluidized bed. The purifying biomass is caught on grains of sand which are maintained in fluidization by an upward air flow. The reactor is situated downstream of an activated sludge tank and ensures nitrification of the effluent. At its outlet a recirculation loop channels some of the mixed liquor back to the activated sludge tank-head where the nitrates are broken down into gaseous nitrogen(denitrification). The remaining mixed liquor is channelled towards the clarification stage where the purified water is separated from the sludge. 2, record 27, English, - fixed%20bacterium

Material and product design incorporating agro-based materials goes beyond applications like thatched roofs, wattle façades and other examples harking back to older days. Its goal is to use proven and new technologies and make such composites that satisfy the demanded functional specifications while containing a high degree of environmental friendliness. The first applications of agro based materials in the building industry may be found in insulation and interior decoration. The Dutch market offers insulation materials based on waste paper(including Isofloc and Isocell). Flax insulation mats are produced in the Netherlands by Eco Fiber. Hemp is another material suitable for insulation mats. Hemp is better resistant to moisture than flax. But as yet there has not been much experience with applications of this material in the building industry. The use of coconut fibers as insulation material offers several benefits such as a low energy content and high insulation value. The material is naturally highly moisture resistant. Insulation materials can be treated with halogen-free cellulose fire retardant. To preserve the material, the fibers can be treated just like wood with boric salt. Another technology is to treat cellulose fibers via the so-called PLATO(Proving Lasting Advanced Timber Option) process. This involves heating the fibers in an autoclave under 14 atmosphere pressure to about 200 degrees Celsius. In this process the lignin and the hemi-cellulose in the fiber chemically react generating a water resistant bakelite-type of resin-compound around the remaining cellulose. 2, record 34, English, - agro%2Dbased%20material

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration. 1, record 35, English, - laser%20force%20microscope

... a soil/duff drought index [developed by Keetch and Byram (1968]) that ranges from 0 (no drought) to 800 (extreme drought) and is based on soil capacity of 8 inches of water. Factors in the index are maximum daily temperature, daily precipitation, antecedent precipitation, and annual precipitation. 4, record 48, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index
Record number: 48, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The Keetch Byram Drought Index(KBDI) provides a daily measure of soil dryness, which, in turn, gives an indication of water stress in plants. The KBDI represents the net effect of precipitation and evapotranspiration in producing cumulative moisture deficiency in deep duff or upper soil layers. The KBDI has a range from 0(no drought or soil moisture deficiency, i. e. soil at field capacity) to 2000(extreme drought, maximum soil moisture deficiency possible). The index can be viewed as the amount of rain needed to bring the soil back to saturation, with one mm of rain reducing the index by 10 points. The 0-2000 point scale is divided into three drought classes : 0-999=Low; 1000-1499=Moderate; 1500-2000=High. The KBDI is simple to calculate as it uses only two, daily weather observations-maximum temperature and 24-hour rainfall. The system functions in a book-keeping fashion where estimates of daily evapo-transpiration and measurements of precipitation increase or decrease the value of yesterdays index. The KBDI by itself is not a Fire Danger Rating System as it gives no indicate of the ease of ignition of the vegetation, or of the rate of fire spread, fire intensity and difficulty of control. It does however serve as a useful measure of drought occurrence. 7, record 48, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI): ... 0 - 200: Soil moisture and large class fuel moistures are high and do not contribute much to fire intensity. Typical of spring dormant season following winter precipitation. 200 - 400: Typical of late spring, early growing season. Lower litter and duff layers are drying and beginning to contribute to fire intensity. 400 - 600: Typical of late summer, early fall. Lower litter and duff layers actively contribute to fire intensity and will burn actively. 600 - 800: Often associated with more severe drought with increased wildfire occurrence. Intense, deep burning fires with significant downwind spotting can be expected. Live fuels can also be expected to burn actively at these levels. 9, record 48, English, - Keetch%2DByram%20drought%20index

ice dam : This term was submitted to our language information service and appeared in the following sentence :"An ice dam is being installed at the back of the building to stop any ice and snow from falling on the deck. "However, since we could not validate this use of the term in any other source, we do not recommend its usage. An "ice dam" is normally(and correctly) used to designate a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of an inadequately insulated and ventilated roof and prevents melting snow(water) from draining off the roof, causing ice damming(in French "digue de glace"). 8, record 59, English, - snow%20guard

Less well-modified malt, however, benefits from a period of mashing at lower temperatures to permit the breakdown of proteins and glucans. This requires some form of temperature programming, which is achieved by decoction mashing. After grist is mashed in at 35° to 40°C(95° to 105°F), a proportion is removed, boiled, and added back. Mashing with two or three of these decoctions raises the temperature in stages to 65°C. The decoction process, traditional in lager brewing, uses four to six volumes of water per volume of grist and requires a second vessel called the mash cooker. 1, record 64, English, - decoction

Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding. 6, record 65, English, - light%20detection%20and%20ranging

The designer [of a show jumping course] can choose from a wide range of jumps that fall into three main categories : uprights, spreads, and triples. Uprights are jumps with the elements placed one above the other. An example is the post and rail, which has poles placed one above the other between two posts. This jump can generally be made higher or lower by adjusting the rests or cups on to the posts. A spread in an obstacle set up so that the horse has to jump both height and width. Spreads include the well-known water jump, the double oxer(two sets of uprights with a hedge sandwiched between), and the hog's back(three parallel rails, with the middle rail higher than the other two). The most common triple is the triple bars, which has three poles on separate supports. The poles are set [at] different heights, with the lowest one at the front. The jumps looks a bit like a staircase. Combinations are two or more jumps placed so close together that the horse can take only one or two strides between each one. Three jumps is the maximum in a combination. 4, record 67, English, - pole

3, record 67, French, - barre

On the beach the top of the wave breaks and mingles with the foot of the wave, both dashing forward with a force driven by the energy from the height and speed of the collapsing wave. The resulting rush of water is fast and strong and moves sand effortlessly up the beach. The water then comes to a rest as the sand particles settle out. The water then begins flowing back down the beach, first slowly and then faster until it dislodges cohesive sand grains. But the forcing power is much less than that of the on-rushing waves. The particles that settled at the top of the forward rush, stay because of the hysteresis(lagging behind) between erosion speed and settling speed... 3, record 74, English, - hysteresis

Most roofs have a single layer of underlayment (i.e. builder’s felt) that protects against moisture penetration and in many northern states an extra waterproofing membrane is required by building codes. 5, record 77, English, - ice%20guard

When superheated steam expands in a turbine it drops in pressure, loses its superheat, and becomes wet... Consequently, this steam is led out of the turbine after it has passed through the early high-pressure stages. It is then piped back to a reheater, a device similar in design and placement to a superheater, where it is reheated to approximately the original superheat temperature. From the reheater, the steam enters the turbine at a succeeding stage and passes through the remainder of the turbine. It exhausts at low pressure and is condensed into water for recirculation to the boiler. 1, record 79, English, - reheater

So what is the difference between a non-condensing and condensing engine? A "condensing" steam engine does not exhaust its piped steam. Instead the spent steam is piped into a devise whcih, like a car radiator, cools the steam turning it back in to liquid water(cooling and condensing the steam). That still very hot wtaer is pumped back into the boilers where it is reheated and reused. Since the returning water is still very hot it requires less heat to bring it back up to boiling temperature. A big savings in fuel and boiling water is free of mud and dirt like normal river water. 4, record 89, English, - condensing%20steam%20engine

Many believe steam cleaning or hot water extraction is the best carpet cleaning method available... Hot water extraction utilizes a push-pull stroke for effective carpet cleaning. The hot water sprayer is located on the rear of the extraction wand. When the rearward thrust is made hot water is injected into the carpet pile where it is extracted a split second later by the extraction cup. The forward stroke is used to remove excess moisture and any remaining soil. For heavily soiled areas continuous back and forth motions can be used to increase the temperature of the area to assist in soil removal. 3, record 91, English, - steam%20cleaning

Fixers can be reused for a certain number of rolls of film. As the fixer gets old with use, the fixing time will need to be increased accordingly. These times will depend on the fixer and the type of film. With most traditional films, you can tell if the film is under-fixed when the film base is cloudy instead of clear. Over-fixing, however, can cause staining. Pour the fixer back into its bottle and wash the film with the top of the film container off under running water for one minute. 1, record 93, English, - under%2Dfixed

Tardigrade, any of a group of tiny arthropod-like animals characterized by four pairs of stubby legs ending in large claws, a stout body, rounded back, and lumbering gait. They are also known as "water bears. "... Their most striking feature is their ability to temporarily enter a nearly lifeless state known as anabiosis, which helps them survive environmental extremes.... Tardigrades are most commonly found in association with the water film on mosses, liverworts, and lichens.... Tardigrades use a pair of oral stylets, or needle-like mouthparts, to pierce the walls of plant cells and feed on the liquid inside. 2, record 100, English, - anabiosis
