Tips for street wash water. Industrial facilities and construction sites that discharge debris and sediment to city streets must clean up after their operations in a reasonable amount of time; but they must also do it properly. Washing these pollutants further into the storm sewer system(i. e. washing them into catch basins or other stormwater inlet structures) is not an option. A careful balance must be met between applying enough water to clean the street, but not so much as to either flood the street or cause pollutants to be discharged further into the system. 3, record 5, English, - street%20wash%20water

Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Electro-osmosis is the transport of water from one electrode to another. It results from the support medium being charged. At neutral and alkaline pH the charge is usually negative, the charged medium therefore attempts to move towards the anode. To balance this, positively charged water molecules(H3O+) move to the cathode. This movement of water does not affect the fractionating capacity but can cause loss of water from reservoirs, thus altering the homogeneity of the electrophoretic field. 4, record 14, English, - electroosmosis

... in many plants water availability is one of the most important factors limiting photosynthesis under natural conditions. Because water is lost from leaves through the same pores(known as stomata) that carbon dioxide enters, the plant must balance carbon dioxide uptake against water loss. Under conditions of limited water availability, the stomata restrict water loss, which exerts a strong control on the net rate of photosynthesis by limiting the availability of carbon dioxide within the leaf. 1, record 18, English, - carbon%20dioxide%20uptake

1, record 18, French, - absorption%20de%20gaz%20carbonique

Skimboarding(or skimming) is a sport which involves riding a board on an outgoing wave.... Unlike surfing, skimboarding starts on the beach. The skimboarder stands within running distance from the point of entry into the water with the skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. As the desired wave approaches, the skimboarder runs towards the water. Depending on conditions, the board is dropped on a thin layer of water from a receding wave or on the thicker water in front of the wave. Then he or she runs onto the board one foot at a time using a technique known as the "One-Step" while properly positioning the feet and maintaining balance towards the centre of the board. 4, record 25, English, - skimboarding

The Palmer Index was developed by Wayne Palmer in the 1960s and uses temperature and rainfall information in a formula to determine dryness. It has become the semi-official drought index. The Palmer Index is most effective in determining long term drought-a matter of several months-and is not as good with short-term forecasts (a matter of weeks). It uses a 0 as normal, and drought is shown in terms of minus numbers; for example, minus 2 is moderate drought, minus 3 is severe drought, and minus 4 is extreme drought. ... The Palmer Index can also reflect excess rain using a corresponding level reflected by plus figures; i.e., 0 is normal, plus 2 is moderate rainfall, etc. 8, record 26, English, - Palmer%20drought%20severity%20index

It was developed to measure lack of moisture over a relatively long period of time and is based on the supply and demand concept of a water balance equation. Included in the equation are amount of evaporation, soil recharge, and runoff and temperature and precipitation data. 9, record 26, English, - Palmer%20drought%20severity%20index

PALMER DROUGHT INDEX [is] a long-term meteorological drought severity index produced by the NOAA/USDA (Department of Agriculture) Joint Agricultural Weather Facility [that] depicts prolonged times, as in months or years, of abnormal dryness or wetness [over large regions]. It responds slowly, changing little from week to week, and reflects long-term moisture runoff, recharge, and deep percolation, as well as evapotranspiration. 10, record 26, English, - Palmer%20drought%20severity%20index

The main terms involved include the vertical fluxes of energy into or out of the surface due to net radiation, sensible heat, and latent heat, as well as the net horizontal fluxes of energy that may take place below the surface (e.g., due to ocean currents). 3, record 30, French, - bilan%20%C3%A9nerg%C3%A9tique%20de%20la%20surface

The driving force in substitutions between primary energies is twofold. On one hand we have the economies of scale involved in the technology and distribution infrastructures of each energy source. On the other hand we have the fact that during the last 200 years, the fuel mix of the world’s primary energy sources has evolved toward "lighter" forms, i.e., fuel forms richer in hydrogen. The hydrogen/carbon (H/C) ratio increased from wood (H/C =0.1) to coal (H/C=1) to oil (H/C=2) to natural gas (H/C=4). 6, record 40, English, - hydrogen%2Fcarbon%20ratio

Very High Gravity Fermentation(VHGF). The VHGF process under development at the University of Saskatchewan used a balance of nutrients, temperature control, oxygen and substrate improvement to achieve ethanol concentrations in the 15-24% range. This was a considerable improvement over the 12% normally seen in the fuel ethanol industry. The advantages include a reduction in water use, increased plant capacity, fewer microbe contaminants in the fermentation, and lower energy requirements during distillation. Electrical resistivity fish counters... counting fish by noting changes in the electrical resistivity of water through which they swim was pioneered by Lethlean. The basis of his approach was to apply a low voltage across two volumes of water through which the fish to be counted are constrained to pass and detect the changes in their resistances caused by the presence of the fish... This device [electrical resistivity fish counter] amplifies the "out of balance" voltage caused by the presence of fish, passes this signal through logic circuitry and activates an appropriately labelled digit meter. 1, record 61, English, - electrical%20resistivity%20fish%20counter

3, record 61, French, - compteur%20%C3%A0%20r%C3%A9sistivit%C3%A9%20pour%20poissons

[In a restricted marine environment] If the climate is arid, evaporation exceeds inflow, and the water becomes hypersaline.... Under conditions of aridity, the restricted sea has adjacent lands with little or no stream action other than torrential episodes which may occasionally wash in detrital material. The sea may attain high temperatures, with excessive evaporation, and development of salinity greater than that of the open sea. Excessive evaporation produces a lowering of water level, and induces a permanent inflowing current of normal sea water across, or through, the restricting barriers.... If it were not for the continued inflow current, the history of restricted seas in arid climates would be short. The water would completely evaporate, leaving behind a relatively thin coating of saline residue. Maintenance of inflow from the open sea provides a continuous supply of dissolved salts, and a balance is reached between evaporation and inflow for given conditions. Inevitably, the concentration of salts within the restricted area is increased and may reach the saturation point for some. 2, record 69, English, - restricted%20arid%20environment

1, record 69, French, - environnement%20restreint%20aride
