Assigned amount unit (AAU). This represents a unit issued out of a country's initial assigned amount and designated as an assigned amount unit (or AAU), expressed as a tonne of CO2-equivalent, by the Registry or an overseas registry of a country listed in Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol.

Emissions trading enables Annex I Parties to acquire assigned amount units (AAUs) from other Annex I Parties that are able to more easily reduce emissions.

Pour le Canada, la quantité visée par les UQA pour la première période d'engagement équivaut à 94 pour 100 de ses émissions de 1990 multipliés par cinq (représentant les cinq années de cette période). Pour se conformer au Protocole de Kyoto, il faut que la quantité totale correspondant aux unités de quantités attribuées (UQA), aux unités de réduction des émissions (URE), aux réductions d'émissions certifiées (REC) et aux unités de suppression (US) détenues par le Canada soit égale ou supérieure à ses émissions au cours de la période 2008-2012.
