L'adjectif «abusif» suggère l'idée de «ce qui est exagéré ou qui dépasse une limite convenable». Utilisé pour décrire un comportement, il ne l'est jamais pour qualifier une personne. «Violent» ne peut traduire «abusive» que lorsque ce terme anglais est utilisé dans son sens le plus fort, «qui fait preuve d'une grande brutalité, d'un vif emportement». L'adjectif «maltraitant» (beaucoup utilisé en psychologie, mais absent des grands dictionnaires de langue sauf sous la forme verbale) s'applique aussi bien aux comportements verbaux que physiques.
