The physical state of the wastes. Low-level radioactive wastes can exist in solid, liquid or gaseous form. Any solid waste may give off a radioactive gas .... Water flowing through a solid waste may leach out soluble radioactive material (e.g., the acid leachates of some uranium mine tailings).

The ultrasonic-aided leachate treatment process involves enhanced chemical treatment of acidic soil leachate solutions. These solutions, also known as acid mine drainage, are caused by the oxidation and dissolution of sulfide-bearing wastes, which produces sulfuric acid. The resulting acidic water leaches metal contaminants from the exposed waste rock and mine tailings, creating large volumes of toxic acidic leachates.

L'exploitation des mines et le traitement des minéraux engendrent [...] la production de divers types de rejets, qui doivent être gérés de façon rationnelle et sécuritaire afin de protéger l'environnement. [Des] préoccupations existent [...] face au phénomène du drainage minier acide (DMA) associé à l'oxydation des minéraux sulfureux, tels la pyrite et la pyrrhotite. Lorsque exposés aux conditions climatiques, ces minéraux peuvent, dans certaines circonstances, réagir avec l'eau et l'oxygène atmosphérique pour engendrer un lixiviat acide favorisant la dissolution des métaux et autres contaminants susceptibles de créer des impacts défavorables à l'environnement.

La biodégradabilité des lixiviats est inversement proportionnelle à leur âge. Dans les décharges jeunes, on note des lixiviats acides où les métaux sont solubilisés, alors que dans les décharges plus âgées, dans lesquelles se déroulent une fermentation méthanique alcaline, les lixiviats sont moins chargés en métaux et donc plus facilement biodégradables.

Le terme «produit de lixiviation» (ou «lixiviat») désigne la partie soluble d'un solide qui a été entraînée par l'eau de ruissellement ou de lavage.
