ACOUSTIC EMISSION [2 records]

Record 1 2008-02-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Acoustics (Physics)
  • Biometrics
CONT

As a user writes on a paper surface, the movement of the pen tip over the paper fibres generates acoustic emissions that are transmitted in the form of stress waves within the material of a writing block beneath the document being signed.

OBS

acoustic emission: term officially approved by the Security Terminology Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Acoustique (Physique)
  • Biométrie
OBS

Record 2 1998-10-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Destructive and Non-destructive Tests (Mat.)
DEF

The phenomenon of transient elastic-wave generation due to a rapid release of strain energy caused by a structural alteration in a solid material.

CONT

An acoustic emission sensor (AE) can detect high-frequency emission, for example, from a crack opening in a piece of metal. Current devices aim to detect a breaking drill or cutting tool as the crack is propagating. The intention is to stop the machine tool spindle before serious damage occurs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Contrôle destructif et non destructif (Matér.)
CONT
