ACOL was created to advise Minister Glenn Hagel, Chair of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) Post-Secondary Expectations Project and Saskatchewan's Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training, and the former Minister of Industry, John Manley, on a co-ordinated approach for governments, universities, colleges, and the private sector to integrate online post-secondary learning into Canadian universities and colleges. The current Minister of Industry, Brian Tobin, has also underlined the importance he places on this matter
