The Advisory Committee on the Protection of Special Places was established in 1981 to advise the minister responsible for the Special Plans Protection Act. Chaired by the executive director of heritage, it makes recommendations concerning the administration, classification and acquisition of archaelogical and historical remains and palaeontological sites; conducts research on existing and possible future special places; conducts research concerning the possible removal from designation of existing special places; and insures that persons affected by a special places designation which is being considered have the opportunity to be heard by the committee.
