The AFM can operate in either a "constant force" mode or a "constant height" mode. In the constant force mode, the DSP [digital signal processor] adjusts the height of the sample under the tip based on the deflection error signal, thus keeping the force constant. Les informations spatiales sont ensuite converties et transmises à un processeur d'image et visualisées sur un écran vidéo en affectant aux différentes altitudes des niveaux de gris donnés.
