Créé en 1912, à Bloemfontein pour défendre les intérêts de la majorité noire contre la domination blanche, il fut déclaré hors-la-loi par le Parti national pendant l'apartheid en 1960. Il est rélégalisé en 1990 alors que l'apartheid est aboli en juin 1991.
