Department of Industry and Development was established September 1, 1959 when the Department of Industries and Labour split to form the Department of Industry and Development and the Department of Labour. Name changed May 2, 1968 to Department of Industry and Tourism. Name changed again June 2, 1972 to Alberta Industry and Commerce. The tourism functions of the Department of Industry and Tourism became the new Department of Tourism, which was not established until January 1, 1973. Name changed again April 1, 1975 to Alberta Business Development and Tourism. Split 1979 to form Alberta Economic Development and Alberta Tourism and Small Business.

On June 2, 1972 the Department of Industry and Tourism changed to Alberta Industry and Commerce. The tourism functions of the former Department of Industry and Tourism became the new Department of Tourism. which was not established until January 1, 1973. Absorbed April 1, 1975 by the new Alberta Business Development and Tourism.
