La réserve alcaline (ex. : carbonate de calcium ou de magnésium) neutralise les substances acides contenues dans les matières cellulosiques, telles que les papiers et cartons. Ces acides peuvent provenir de la dégradation naturelle du papier ou encore de facteurs environnementaux et contribuer à la détérioration des papiers et cartons en les rendant cassants et friables et en provoquant leur jaunissement. La réserve alcaline conservera au papier ou au carton un niveau de pH alcalin.
