Notion proposée par F. Varela pour illustrer la dualité universelle entre «autonomie» et «commande». Les systèmes autopoiétiques sont autonomes. Leurs changements sont subordonnés au maintien de leur propre organisation et ils conservent une identité indépendante qui entre en interaction avec un observateur. L'identité des systèmes allopoiétiques dépend de l'observateur, elle est définie de l'extérieur.
