Certaines molécules protéiques ou oligosaccharidiques font l'objet d'un polymorphisme au sein des individus d'une même espèce. Ce polymorphisme est défini par des gènes alléliques, c'est-à-dire des formes alternatives, mutuellement exclusives, engendrées par des mutations germinales portant sur quelques codons du gène original. Ces formes moléculaires, propres à certains groupes d'individus au sein de l'espèce, définissent les allotypes, marqueurs antigéniques déterminés génétiquement et transmis sur le mode dominant. L'immunisation entre deux sujets différents au sein de la même espèce, c'est-à-dire l'allo-immunisation, induit une réponse immunitaire dirigée contre ces antigènes allotypiques ou alloantigènes. 1, record 2, French, - allotype
