The start zones of avalanches are classified as either alpine (above treeline), treeline or below treeline. The treeline is defined as the elevation band above the dense forests and below the area with very few or no trees. An important difference between these zones is wind exposure. Alpine areas are most exposed to the effect of wind on snowpack distribution. Treeline areas generally show less wind effect on snowpack distribution but the distribution is complicated by bands of trees that may act as snow fences. The effect of the wind on the snowpack is further reduced in dense forests below treeline. 3, record 1, English, - above%20treeline

Yoho National Park of Canada. ... Three distinct vegetation zones exist in this mountainous region, largely because of the inherent changes in elevation. ... The highest of the three zones, the alpine region, cannot support trees. Vegetation is sparse, with some alpine meadows, and as one goes higher up still, one enters the exclusive domain of hardy lichens that cling to the bare rock. 5, record 2, English, - alpine

Parc national du Canada Yoho. [...] 2, record 2, French, - zone%20alpine

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A major regional community (biome) of vegetation in high mountainous regions and on high-level plateaus. The plants generally grow in thin stony soil and are subjected to high light intensity and high wind speeds. The climate differs from that of the tundra as there is daylight in winter and darkness in summer, more precipitation and wind, and a higher degree of solar radiation, but no permafrost. The number of plant species, although limited, is greater than that found in the tundra. Certain drought-tolerant species (e.g. grasses, sedges, mosses, and lichens) are common to both communities. In temperate latitudes there are many brightly coloured flowers in summer on the alpine pastures. The vegetation changes as the altitude increases due to the associated drop in temperature. The vegetation also differs between north- and south-facing slopes. The lower limit of the alpine zone (see tree line) varies in different mountain regions and also varies with the wetness of the locality and the mass of the mountain range. 3, record 4, English, - alpine
