A colloidal form of silica made by combustion of silicon tetrachloride in hydrogen-oxygen furnaces [which appears as a] fine, white powder [and which is used as a] thickener, thixotropic, and reinforcing agent in inks, resins, rubber, paints, cosmetics, [and as a] base material for high-temperature mortars.

Qu'elle soit sous forme cristalline ou amorphe, sublimée ou colloïdale, poreuse ou gel, la silice se retrouve dans une très large gamme de produits traditionnels ou plus high tech : pneus, revêtements, pâte dentifrice, médicaments, batteries, microélectronique. Le milieu industriel classe ces différentes silices par leur mode d'élaboration dictant le type de matériau et donc le type d'application : la silice précipitée, la silice amorphe sublimée, le gel de silice, la silice colloïdale et le verre de silice : [...] - La silice amorphe sublimée donne des surfaces actives de 50 à 400 m²/g. En tant qu'additif elle améliore la résistance à la traction, la rigidité, la couleur, l'opacité ou la brillance.
