Les décharges traditionnelles et même les décharges broyées peuvent être le siège de réactions anaérobies du fait de tassements résiduels. Ces décharges, en cours d'exploitation ou dont l'exploitation est terminée, peuvent alors émettre des gaz malodorants véhiculés par le méthane. Dans ce cas, afin de supprimer les nuisances, le drainage des gaz peut-être effectué par des tubes perforés introduits dans les déchets par forage.
