Researchers are evaluating angiogenic gene therapy in people with coronary artery disease (CAD), whose own natural angiogenic response may be not be enough to fully restore blood flow around narrowed or blocked arteries due to atherosclerosis.

La première tentative de «thérapie génique angiogénique»a eu lieu en 1996 chez un patient atteint d'artérite chronique oblitérante des membres inférieurs à un stade évolué (stade III/IV). La délivrance était réalisée par voie endovasculaire, le plasmide contenant l'ADN complémentaire du VEGF [facteur de croissance de l'endothélium vasculaire] étant administré dans la paroi artérielle en amont de la zone d'occlusion.
