The resonant frequencies of the oscillators were taken to correspond to the observed atomic spectral lines. Actually the valence electrons are bound by the Coulomb field of the ion cores. For very large deviations from equilibrium the anharmonicity of the electron oscillators must be taken into account.

Lorsque le champ électromagnétique est plus intense [que celui d'un oscillateur harmonique], il convient d'ajouter au potentiel V un terme cubique. L'oscillateur est dit alors anharmonique, et il possède une susceptibilité non linéaire [bêta] à l'origine du doublement de la fréquence [oméga]. Le calcul montre que [bêta] est proportionnelle au paramètre d'anharmonicité du potentiel ainsi qu'au cube de la susceptibilité linéaire.
