potlatch: Historical. Among Indian peoples of the West Coast, a large gathering to celebrate some event, at which the host would present costly gifts to his guests. Chez les Indiens de la côte nord-ouest du continent nord-américain, société très hiérarchisée, le potlatch avait lieu pendant l'hiver, après stockage, et consistait à donner, recevoir et rendre davantage de très importantes richesses, à l'échelon de l'ethnie, de la tribu ou du clan, dans un cycle continu d'échange. Le principe en était l'ostentation afin d'acquérir du prestige : par l'étalage et le don de richesses, il s'agissait d'écraser le donataire qui ne pouvait refuser, de le ruiner ou de lui faire perdre son prestige et lui faire accepter un rang subordonné. Le donataire était en effet obligé de rendre davantage s'il voulait conserver son rang, courant ainsi le risque de la ruine, sinon il perdait définitivement son rang et son prestige.
