Les anticorps hétérophiles de la mononucléose agglutinent les globules rouges de mouton ou de cheval. Ils sont absorbés par les globules rouges de bœuf, mais non par le rein de cobaye, ce qui permet de les distinguer d'anticorps hétérophiles analogues observés chez des sujets normaux ou après une maladie sérique, au moyen de la réaction Paul Bunnell et Davidson (P.B.D.).
