Just below the region of separation of the pinnae from the petiole are two flaps of tissue called aphlebiae. These minute vascularized structures are common among many of the zygopterids.

Les aphlébies sont des organes plus ou moins foliacées, situés à la base des ramifications [d'anciens types de fougères]. Suivant certains auteurs, elles représentent d'anciennes émergences microphylles produites probablement au moment où le corps de la plante était encore thalloïde. Pour P. Bertrand, ce sont des rachis secondaires, donc de vraies ramifications. Hirmer distingue les "aphlébies vraies" et les "organes aphléboïdes".
