Artificial sweeteners have been classified as nutritive and non-nutritive depending on whether they are a source of calories. The nutritive sweeteners include the mono-saccharide polyols (for example, sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol) and the disaccharide polyols (for example, maltitol and lactitol).
