In Canada, Edmonton's Asian Heritage Month was founded in May 1998 and officially proclaimed by its Mayor, Bill Smith. It became the first ever in Canada to have its event officially recognized by a civic and, later, provincial, government. Three years later, in December 2001, the Senate of Canada passed a motion officially designating May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada.

Le Festival a été créé pour soutenir une plus forte présence asiatique dans le paysage culturel québécois. Le mois de mai a été déclaré au Sénat "Mois du patrimoine asiatique" par l'Honorable Vivienne Poy. Ce mois a été officiellement reconnu par l'ex-ministre Sheila Copps en 2003. Le Mois du patrimoine asiatique a été célébré par dix villes à travers le Canada en 2005 et a été déclaré officiellement par la Ville de Montréal en mai 2004.
