Niveau de pollution où l'on observe un risque d'asphyxie. Il est atteint lorsque les gaz toxiques sont présents dans l'air en quantité suffisante pour abaisser la teneur en oxygène sous le seuil qui permet de travailler sans l'aide d'un appareil de protection respiratoire (18 p. 100 vol./vol.).

OBS

L'expression «niveau asphyxiant», que l'on retrouve dans les textes traduits, n'est pas très heureuse car l'adjectif «asphyxiant» se dit de ce qui asphyxie : [par. ex. : ] Gaz asphyxiant. Atmosphère asphyxiante. (LAROG, 1982, vol. 1, p. 737). On ne peut pas dire d'un niveau qu'il asphyxie.
