L'Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement des sciences (Acfas), ainsi nommée depuis sa création en 1923, s'est dotée d'une nouvelle appellation. Le terme désormais officiel Acfas fait maintenant référence à l'Association francophone pour le savoir. Le terme «francophone» précise que les activités sont proposées en français, même si les participants viennent des quatre coins du monde. Le mot «savoir» a quant à lui remplacé le mot «sciences», car il englobe davantage tous les champs de la recherche, des sciences pure et appliquées aux sciences humaines et sociales.
