Il y a six fuseaux horaires au Canada. Le plus à l'est se trouve à Terre-Neuve, où l'heure normale est en retard de trois heures et demie sur le TU [temps universel]. A l'extrême ouest, l'heure normale du Pacifique est en retard de huit heures sur le TU. Entre ces deux fuseaux, on parle, d'est en ouest, d'heure normale de l'Atlantique, de l'Est, du Centre et des Rocheuses. El Vocabulario científico y técnico de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales dice que "hora" es sinónimo de "tiempo" cuando significa "Coordenada de referencia en el universo físico que, en un lugar determinado, permite ordenar la secuencia de los sucesos, estableciendo un pasado, un presente y un futuro". Este caso de sinonimia es patente en los términos tiempo/hora civil, tiempo/hora legal, tiempo/hora local, tiempo/hora oficial.
