Selon le «Vocabulaire du transport des marchandises dangereuses» (BT no. 183), il existe une nuance entre «niveau naturel» et «niveau de fond». Le premier terme est défini comme le «Niveau d'un polluant correspondant à la pollution par des sources naturelles»; le second terme est défini comme le «Niveau d'un polluant dans un site où l'on envisage l'introduction d'une nouvelle source polluante».
