BACKHAND [8 records]

Record 1 2011-11-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

A ground stroke hit on the left of the body by right-handed players, and on the right of the body by left-handers.

CONT

When Greg Rusedski hits a tennis ball, it seems to involve a lot of moving parts. A lean six-foot-four and 190 pounds, he's all arms and legs as he whomps his big serve and whacks his forehands and backhands.

OBS

Generic term which includes "backhand shot," "backhand slice," "backhand drive," "backhand topspin," etc. - any shot requiring the use of one's backhand. Some purists feel that the term "drive" should strictly allude to a ball hit with a lot of pace regardless of the spin or lack thereof. The terms "shot" and "stroke," however, are more neutral and need not imply any added pace (e.g. drop shot).

PHR

Angled, backspin, chip, crosscourt, flat, hard, hook, inside, inside-out, one-handed, penetrating, righthanded, sharp, short-angled, solid, two-handed backhand.

PHR

Backhand basics, side, slice, miscues.

PHR

To run around one's backhand.

Record 4 2002-08-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Lacrosse
OBS

This shot can be used when the goalie comes across the net and takes away the opening on the shooter's stick side (long side) leaving the side vacant that the shooter just came from (short side)... By moving the stick out to the side and slightly behind his body, the player flexes his top-hand arm, bringing his stick over his shoulder and behind his back.

OBS

Our reading has indicated that the over-the-shoulder shot can indicate both a simple overhand shot (i.e., above the shoulder) and a shot in which the shooter swings the stick both behind the back and over the shoulder.
