A portable, manually operated system comprising 4-inch pipes in 5-foot lengths, a platform, sandpumps, chisels, augers, etc, worked by rods inside the pipes. Used in prospecting alluvial deposits to depths of 50 feet or more.

La sondeuse Bangka a été conçue en 1858 par un ingénieur des mines hollandais; elle était destinée à la prospection des gîtes alluvionnaires stannifères de l'île Bangka, Indonésie. (...) Elle consiste essentiellement en un tubage dans lequel on introduit des outils. Les tubes, de 1 ou 2 mètres de long, filetés, sont vissés en une colonne surmontée d'une plate-forme. Un levier ou "manivelle" permet à deux ouvriers ou plus de faire tourner la colonne de tubes; cette colonne de tubes progresse lentement grâce à son propre poids (...) augmenté du poids des ouvriers montés sur la plate-forme. De plus pour que l'attaque du tubage soit facilitée, on utilise des sabots à denture de scie.
