barachois : on appelle parfois «barachois» la barre elle-même, formée à l'embouchure d'une rivière là où se brisent les vagues. Ce terme, probablement d'origine portugaise («barra» + «choa»), est dérivé d'expressions comme «barre-à-cheois», «barre-éschué», «barre échouée», «barre-à-choir» ou encore «barre-à-échoir», «là où les navires viennent choir». Générique attesté sporadiquement au Québec mais plus usité dans les provinces de l'Atlantique.
