Base flows are generally the flow that exists in a river when there is no rainfall or runoff. Base flow is primarily provided by the groundwater system.

OBS

Do not confuse with "base runoff" which refers to the natural flow of a stream, unaffected by the works of man.

Les cours d'eau, qui forment un vaste réseau recouvrant tout le pays, constituent les voies d'écoulement naturelles des eaux de surface. Celles-ci proviennent principalement du ruissellement et du débit de base. Le ruissellement est formé de l'écoulement superficiel ou souterrain (écoulement divergent) des eaux pluviales vers les cours d'eau ou rivières. Le débit de base résulte de l'émergence des eaux de la nappe phréatique.

OBS

«Débit de base» ne doit pas être associé à l'écoulement souterrain (ground-water runoff) : débit de base naturel, non influencé par l'action humaine.
