In clinical investigations, a bias is any systematic factor other than the intervention of interest that affects the magnitude of (i.e. tends to increase or decrease) an observed difference in the outcomes of a treatment group and a control group. Bias diminishes the accuracy (though not necessarily the precision) of an observation. Randomization is a technique used to decrease this form of bias. Bias also refers to a prejudiced or partial viewpoint that would affect someone's interpretation of a problem. Double blinding is a technique used to decrease this type of bias.

En recherche clinique, un biais est toute erreur systématique qui affecte l’ampleur d’une différence observée (en l’augmentant ou en la diminuant) dans les résultats du groupe expérimental et du groupe témoin. Le biais diminue l’exactitude (mais pas nécessairement la précision) d’une observation. Pour le réduire, on utilise la technique de la répartition aléatoire (randomisation). Bias does not of necessity lead to error, since it may be anticipated and allowed for by employing adjusting or weighting devices, or ostensibly inaccurate results may be interpreted or cross-checked in a variety of ways.

It is possible to extract evidence and synthesize an objective and valid picture even when employing biased or potentially biased sources of information. A principal objective in the process of auditing is the search for and correction of biases. An auditor determines the presence or lack of bias in a group of accounts receivable by circularizing persons against whom claims are held. Offsetting biases are regularly taken advantage of in the construction of "internal controls". By the operation of a normally patterned system of "internal check", valid results are deemed to follow by placing individuals with independent, opposing interests in opposition to each other and making them participants in the recording of the same transaction. The assumption underlying any such device is that the offsetting biases are of the same relative order of magnitude.

Theoretical bias is another way of dealing with the multiplicity of inductive conclusions. Instead of considering all predicate-calculus sentences as potential conclusions, we can restrict our candidates to formulas with a particular vocabulary (conceptual bias) or a particular logical form (logical bias). Conceptual bias is an example of an acceptability condition for inductive conclusions. The idea is to lessen the number of acceptable conclusions by considering only those sentences that can be written in terms of a fixed vocabulary (called the basis set). Logical bias is another way of limiting the range of possible conclusions. For example, we can restrict our attention to conjunctive definitions; i.e., bidirectional implications in which one side mentions the concept being defined and the other side is a conjunction of atoms.
