Ils contiennent peu d'eau (1 à 7 p. 100), des matières volatiles (50 à 60 p. 100), donnent des produits lourds à la distillation (10 p. 100 de goudron anhydre). Ces lignites sont noirs et luisants et ressemblent aux piciformes.
