L'hypothèse d'uniformité dans la répartition des corps célestes est intenable. S'il en était ainsi, le ciel nocturne ne serait pas noir; de jour comme de nuit, le ciel aurait tout entier la luminosité que le disque solaire [...], c'est-à-dire serait uniformément de la couleur du feu. Cette hypothèse fut réfutée par Olbers en 1823 qui donna des raisons suffisantes et nécessaires pour que le fond du ciel nocturne soit noir.
