Título de crédito mediante el cual un armador reconoce haber recibido para transportar ciertas mercancías a través del mar y se compromete a entregarlas al verdadero poseedor del documento cuando la embarcación llegue a su destino. Dicho conocimiento se hace con tres originales y tantas copias como sean necesarias. Puede ser firmado por el capitán, pero hoy día lo hace el agente marítimo. Una de esas copias va al buque, otra se queda en la agencia del puerto, otra con el armador y el resto se envía al cargador si es pagado o bien al armador o a su agente en destino si es por cobrar.
