Les échanges gazeux entre le milieu externe et la plante sont assurés, au travers du liège, par des ouvertures en forme de boutonnières (lenticelles), qui sont, en fait, des excroissances constituées de massifs cellulaires lâches. Les cavités brunes des bouchons sont des lenticelles du liège.
