Par contre à des pH acides, les sels de CaCO3 étant moins solubles dans l'eau que le bicarbonate, il s'ensuit que l'apport supplémentaire de SO4-- favorise la disparition des éléments calciques et accélère la perte du pouvoir tampon. Comme l'acidification est une mesure de la perte du pouvoir tampon, il existe donc une relation forte entre SO4-- en excès et l'acidification. Oden (1976) propose l'utilisation du rapport HCO3-/SO4-- comme un indicateur sensible de l'acidification des lacs dans le temps.
