The Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Public Works was established March 4, 1868. Name changed 1874 to Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Arts, although not officially changed until March 2, 1877. Prior to the formation of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, agricultural administration in Upper Canada was handled by a Board of Agriculture, later named the Bureau of Agriculture. Name changed in 1885 to Department of Agriculture, although not officially changed until March 23, 1888, and again May 18, 1966 to Department of Agriculture and Food. A further name change occurred April 1, 1972 to Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In March 1994, the ministry expanded its mandate to include rural community development and so changed its name to Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
