La grande douve du foie, pour peu qu'elle soit abondante, provoque au bétail et surtout au mouton une maladie grave : la pourriture ou cachexie aqueuse. L'animal devient anémique et souffre d'œdèmes temporaires. Il s'amaigrit et meurt épuisé.
