A large tank with hundreds of pasageways (channels) through it contains the moderator. This complicated tank is called the calandria. It is about 6 m long and 7 m across. The calandria is not a pressure vessel. The moderator is cooled so it will not boil and pressurize the structure. Calandria rupture discs protect the calandria from overpressure.

Une grande cuve comportant des centaines de canaux contient le modérateur. Cette cuve est appelée calandre. Elle mesure environ 6 mètres de longueur et 7 mètres de diamètre. La calandre n'est pas une cuve sous pression. Le modérateur est refroidi de manière à ne pas entrer en ébullition et à ne pas exercer une pression sur la structure. Les disques de rupture de calandre protègent la calandre contre toute surpression.
