La calcedonia puede ser considerada como intermediaria entre el ópalo (amorfo e hidratado) y el cuarzo (cristalizado y anhidro). Concretamente se halla constituida por agujas microscópicas y entrecruzadas, de ambas variedades. Es traslúcida, con brillo céreo y con fractura concoidea.
