Dans la province de Coquimbo, le Chili change peu à peu de physionomie. Ce n'est plus le nord aride et désertique, et pas encore la verte vallée du centre. Les nuits sont froide, humides et les journées douces et tempérées. Un brouillard épais monte du sol chaque soir. Il part des portes du désert et s'arrête sur Coquimbo. Ce brouillard les gens du nord le nomment «la Camanchaca».
