Donnant suite au budget fédéral de février 1999, Santé Canada est actuellement en train de mettre au point une Stratégie canadienne du diabète (SCD) qui comportera trois grands volets : l'Initiative canadienne du diabète (ICD), qui est de portée générale, l'Initiative sur le diabète chez les Autochtones (IDA) et le Système national de surveillance du diabète (SNSD), qui servira à appuyer à la fois l'ICD et l'IDA. Le taux élevé des cas de diabète parmi la population autochtone a accru la probabilité des transplantations rénales.
