The Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada and Statistics Canada are currently working together on a number of initiatives, including geographic names, administrative limits, remote sensing research and geographic information standards. A new project, the Canadian OnLine Unified Geocartographic Analysis and Retrieval System (COUGAR) is currently proposed as that will support the Census. This framework will be based on EMR's national topographic database.

Le ministère de l'Énergie, des Mines et des Ressources Canada et Statistique Canada collaborent actuellement à divers projets portant notamment sur les noms géographiques, les limites administratives, la recherche en télédétection et les normes relatives à l'information géographique. Ils proposent de mettre en œuvre un nouveau projet, soit celui du système COUGAR (Canadian OnLine Unified Geocartographic Analysis and Retrieval System) lequel, en s'appuyant sur la base nationale de données topographiques d'EMR, servirait de cadre géostatistique au Recensement à l'échelle du pays.
