La muqueuse buccale est une membrane rose et lisse qui tapisse l’intérieur de la cavité buccale. Un changement dans l’apparence de celle-ci peut être la manifestation d'une maladie, la plus sérieuse étant le cancer de la bouche. Les signes suivants sont souvent rencontrés dans les lésions cancéreuses : une plaque blanche ou rouge dans la bouche; un ulcère qui est présent depuis plus de deux semaines et qui ne semble pas guérir; une bosse ou un épaississement de la muqueuse buccale; un mal de gorge qui perdure ou une difficulté à mastiquer ou avaler la nourriture.
