One meaning refers to the warp or the filling effect of some satin weave, or a variation of the basic construction. When ribs are woven into goods, the term signifies the cord effect in the warp direction, somewhat similar to the Bedford cord weave. Filling effects can be made as well, and there have been instances where the term has been applied to these constructions.

Le cannelé est obtenu par des flottés de chaîne recouvrant une ou plusieurs duites. Les fils de chaîne du tissu étant très serrés, il se produit des côtes transversales, perpendiculaires aux lisières. Dans cette catégorie de tissu rentre legros de Tours, le cannelé alternatif, le cannelé d'Inde et un dérivé, le cannetillé. La soie fut la plus souvent employée aux XVIIIe s. pour la fabrication de ce tissu, mais le coton et la laine peuvent être utilisés. L'armure du cannelé sert aussi dans l'industrie de la rubanerie.
