Infiltration œdémateuse et sanguine de la peau et du tissu cellulaire des téguments crâniens du nouveau-né en rapport avec la présentation de la tête par rapport à l'orifice du col. Elle est à cheval sur les sutures contrairement au céphalhématome. La bosse séro-sanguine n'est nullement le résultat de pressions ou de frottements anormaux et doit être considérée comme une conséquence physiologique du travail normal.
