La caraque désigna d'abord un bâtiment en usage à Venise au XIVe s. sur lequel on ne possède que des renseignements fragmentaires et contradictoires. Elle évolua ensuite vers un type de navire grand, très haut sur l'eau et gros porteur, dont l'apogée se situe au XVIIe s., où l'on trouve des caraques de 2 000 tonneaux et plus. Ces navires ont servi au commerce des Antilles espagnoles et des Indes portugaises. Finalement, le terme de caraque est devenu un nom générique pour qualifier les bâtiments capables de transporter un fret très important à travers les océans.
